4. Gaetano Scirea

Coming in at number four on our list is legendary Juventus defender Gaetano Scirea.

Scirea is celebrated as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game. He was born in 1953, and joined Juventus in 1974 from Atalanta. He then went on to spend his entire 14-year career with the Bianconeri, making 552 appearances and scoring 32 goals.

As an example of elegance, intelligence, and sportsmanship, Scirea was known for his incredible reading of the game and ability to lead from the back without resorting to aggression. As a sweeper, he redefined the role, combining defensive solidity with composure and technical ability that allowed him to initiate attacks from deep positions.

Scirea’s career with Juventus was marked by unprecedented success, as he helped the team win seven Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, and all major European competitions, including the European Cup in 1985. This made him one of the few players to complete football’s “grand slam” of international club trophies.

Off the pitch, Scirea was admired for his humility and conduct. Tragically, he passed away in 1989 in a car accident while scouting for Juventus. Despite his unfortunate early passing, Scirea’s legacy endures as a symbol of excellence, integrity, and loyalty in football.
